Chiang Mai is a city in the mountainous north of Thailand. It was founded in 1296 and was the capital of the independent kingdom of Lan Na until 1558. In the old town there are still remains of walls and moats from its time as a cultural and religious center. There are also hundreds of ornate Buddhist temples here, including Wat Phra Singh from the 14th century and the Wat Chedi Luang from the 15th century, which is decorated with carved snakes.
